Happy New Year!
I was planning on this blog being mostly home decor and fashion, but it turns out that it's going to be a litte mix of everything... aka a "lifestyle" blog.
I had New Year's Day off of work this year, so I decided it was the perfect time to start a new book! One of my best friends has been suggesting that I read Divergent, by Veronica Roth, for months. She compared it to The Hunger Games, which I loved, but the thought of another apocolyptic type book was a little overwhelming to me. Anyway, after months of nudging me to read it, I finally caved. Boy am I glad I did! This book is AMAZING! I couldn't put it down. I finished it in about 36 hours, and we can contribute probably 25 of those hours to work and sleep.
Here is the offical book description:
In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.
This book has just the right amount of action, adventure, romance, and drama. I would probably rate it PG13 based on the amount of violence, but there's no hot and heavy romance scenes. The best part: It's being made into a movie as we speak! The release date is March 21, 2014, starring Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet. I'm so excited!
There are three books total in the series: Divergent, Inurgent, and Allegiant. I've read the first two, and am about halfway through the third. So far I think it's safe to say that the first one is my favorite!
Has anyone else read these books yet?
